Omni Racer Square Taper Bottom Bracket JIS Cromo Review

My Surly was making a clicking sort of noise with every pedal stroke which forced me to find the source of the noise.  Suspecting the bottom bracket I discovered there was a little bit of side-to-side play, so it was time for a new bottom bracket.  I knew I wanted to try to save a little extra weight with a new bracket, so this led me to Omni Racer.  I decided to go with the cromo version vs the titanium as it still saved me about 82 grams over the old bracket.  On top of saving some grams this part is also made in the USA which I always like.  It’s a great looking part, have a look:

The install was easy, and the bracket came with good instructions.  The only thing I did differently than normal was take their suggestion to add Teflon tape.  Seems like a good idea.  Here are their instructions:

Rating

Bracket looks really good and is quite light like I wanted.  It’s not cheap at around $60 so I’m gonna give this a 4 out of 5-star rating.  I will see how long it lasts and revisit this rating later.

  1. The taper looks rounded versus a square taper BB, which develops indentations from the crank and wears more quickly. $60 probably is high but I’m sure the demand is low and hard to find, just a guess.
