If you do a lot of cycling, eventually you will wear out your chain. This is a great tool to tell you when it is ready to be replaced. It is simple and easy to use and it’s not that expensive. Have a look:

Specs
Made of silver alloy
Compatible with most 5-12 speed chains
Gauge indicates .5% and .75% or more wear.
How to use
This is very simple to use. You put the side with the rounded hook into your chain and see if the other end will fit into the chain. If it doesn’t fit your chain is fine. If the 0.5 side fits your chain, it has .5% wear. If the 0.75 side fits your chain has .75% or more wear. Here is a guide for when to replace your chain:
0.5%: replace if you have a 11 or 12 speed chain.
0.75% or more wear: replace your chain.

Lovely preventive tool
I wish I had the skills to fix my own bike. I always take it to my bike guys shop at the end of the season, he does whatever to maintain it for me.
Some of the basic stuff is pretty easy if you wanted to learn.
I would like to and I may take a workshop
You should watch some of the park tool repair videos on YouTube. Will give you a good idea of what is involved in repairs and maintenance.
